Cannabis
Marijuana is prepared from the dried and cured flowered buds or “colas” of the female cannabis plant. These cola’s are highest in THC and CBD content, which range between .5 and 20+ percent. Hemp is produced from plants that contain little or no THC or CBD while the coveted “one-hit-wonder” strains possess at least 20 percent or more.
Indica vs. Sativa
- Indica plants are thought to have originated in the Hindu Kush region of the Himalayan foothills. In nature, they are more short and compact when compared to sativas. The buds, or colas, are tight, dense, and aromatic. The effects considered lethargic and body-oriented. Indicas are recommended for sleep and relaxation since they produce the “stoned” effects.
- Sativas are noted to grow between 5-15 feet tall outdoors and produce longer, leafier bud formations. The effects are considered psychedelic, thoughtful, and spacey. Sativas are recommended for daily activities since they produce the “high” effect.
- Similarities do exist among indicas and sativas, which can often cause some difficulty when trying to distinguish between the two. For starters, both can be body oriented, cerebral or even psychedelic. In considering an indica, one should look for slowness of muscle, mind, or both.
THC vs. CBD
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
- THC is the main psychoactive substance found in the cannabis plant.
- THC has mild to moderate analgesic qualities, which is why medical marijuana can be used to treat pain. The mechanism for analgesic effects caused directly by THC or other cannabinoids is not fully understood.
CBDs (Cannabinoids)
- Cannabis is known for possessing the psychoactive constituent, THC. In fact, cannabis contains more than 60 cannabinoid compounds. Among these are cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN). Cannabinoids represent a unique pharmacological class of compounds and have not been found in any other plant.
- CBD is not psychoactive, but anticonvulsant and sedative. It is the CBD compound that reduces glaucoma pressure, relieves pain, and lowers stress. It is believed by experts that marijuana obtains most of its medicinal properties from CBD.
